H1N1 Flu Information
Anyone with flu symptoms should see their private physician or the local health department.

Swine farmers should heighten biosecurity practices around the farm to be sure that no one enters the farm without properly disinfecting.

Currently, no swine farm in the United States has been infected, so there is no need to worry about catching the virus from pigs, a truck carrying pigs, wastewater, or pork products. There is more worry that humans will contaminate pigs instead of pigs contaminating humans.

Pork is completely safe to eat. Always be sure to follow proper cooking procedures for meats.

Soil Testing Information

In North Carolina, most soils are acidic and low in nutrients. Good plant growth usually requires the addition of lime and fertilizer. Soil testing is the best way to find out how much to apply. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture offers soil testing and information for both commercial growers and home owners. Soil samples are usually analyzed within about a week, but may take longer from late fall through early spring due to heavy loads from farmers at this time. Results of the tests are posted on an online system and also mailed to the client. MORE
