One of the best ways to stay healthy is to wash your hands. Especially when the weather is getting cooler and people are becoming sick. Everyone should wash their hands! Knowing when and how to properly wash your hands is a great way to remove germs, prevent germs from spreading, and avoid getting sick.

You should wash your hands often but certainly before or after these activities:

  • Before, during, and after preparing food
  • Before eating food
  • Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick with vomiting or diarrhea
  • Before and after treating a cut or wound
  • After using the toilet
  • After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet
  • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
  • After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste
  • After handling pet food or pet treats
  • After touching garbage

Follow these quick and easy steps to guarantee an efficient hand wash:

  1. Wet your hands with clean water and apply soap.
  2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, your wrist and under your nails. Make sure you get your nails good!
  3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. You can sing/hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice!
  4. Rinse your hands.
  5. Dry your hands.Wash your Hands flyer image
